I get the feeling the everytime this hand makes a fist, and then relaxes, a different landscape will appear.

Hi Aubrey, Yes, this is an intriguing photo, it does seem changeable. Though it's certainly not functional art at all, or is it? If so, what is its function? How does it work? Does art have to be functional in order to be appreciated in our times?

For me, this piece works because it feels like reaching out, trying to connect with its object of interest, like an energy current, or some loose neutrons/neurons. Ted Berrigan said when a poem works it's like a machine made out of words that's activated by the voice and rises into the air like a mobile or maybe an electric helicopter. Zinggggg!

What happens when a piece of art works? Maybe it strikes a chord in someone, resonates so much that you can't help but respond to it. Makes you want to make something of your own...

When art works, when it works with you, it clicks, it snaps, it makes your head nod up and down in agreement as you experience the unique pleasure of two puzzle pieces - formerly lost and floating on a large table - connecting with each other.
What a great analogy! Clicking, snapping, connecting...zzzinging, striking, whirring...Do you remember the Peter Paul and Mary song about The Marvelous Toy? "It went zip when it moved and pop when it stopped,/ Whirrr when it stood still/ I never knew just what it was and I guess I never will."
