Heath Ledger
I'm quite shocked by this news. I respected Heath Ledger as an actor and liked him in Brokeback Mountain and in the above role as Bob Dylan in I'm Not There. Someone said it's as though another River Phoenix has died. Someone compared him to a young Marlon Brando. I've read two news articles so far--the London Times and The New York Times--and neither is saying that it was a suicide, but he was found with pills surrounding his body. They say he had a drug addiction problem that he had kicked a year ago. They say he leaves behind a daughter named Matilda Rose. When something like this happens to someone in your own generation it really makes an impact on you. I remember when Kurt Cobain died and how shocked I was by that. One source attributed the deaths to the pressures of Hollywood. I wonder if it isn't more the pressures of our times. It's too soon to jump to conclusions--they're doing the toxicology report on Wednesday, I believe. Yet it still makes you wonder when our culture is going to learn how to say when, when it's time to say when.
