I feel that this is meant to be read with the excitement of a child. The pond is an old place, well-remembered, the frog is new. Didn't Basho have his own form, different then other haiku? I don't know that much.

The moss of the tree reminds me of an old, green pond - with the flaming leaves floating on top.
